VACT's Something's Afoot
VERONA – Just in time for a little Halloween fun, Verona Area Community Theater presents a clever who-done-it musical which takes a satirical poke at Agatha Christie mysteries. “Something’s Afoot” opens October 30th at the Verona High School Performing Arts Center.
Written by James McDonald, David Vos and Robert Gerlach, this zany murder mystery musical takes place in an isolated English country house during a horrific thunderstorm. Ten people become stranded together and are one by one picked off by a murderer among them. The interesting part of this murder mystery is that is a comedy complete with clever and yet fiendish devices that bring each victim to their death. As the bodies pile up in the library of the house, the rest of the survivors frantically attempt to discover who among them is the real culprit.
Although the music and the story itself is not necessarily a very common show, director Matt Pulda is sure that the audiences will approve of this murder mystery comedy. “I am so excited to be debuting as a director with VACT with this show,” Pulda comments. “The story itself is really intriguing and the cast and production staff that I have had the pleasure to work with has really created a wonderful musical.” Production staff referred to by Pulda include Marie Kyle as vocal director, Mark Holten as technical director, Dale and Steve Nickels as sound and lighting directors, Sara L’Herault as stage manager, as well as Jane Pulda as costume mistress, among many others.
Although a small cast of characters, every one of them plays an important part in revealing who the real murderer is. All VACT veterans with at least one show, the cast of characters for “Something’s Afoot” includes: Katie Monk (Lettie), Mike Ducett (Flint), Craig Heuer (Clive), Alannah Spencer (Hope Langdon), James Listug (Dr. Grayburn), Jacob Turner (Nigel Rancour), Macarey Schaefer (Lady Grace Manley-Prowe), Jim McNeill (Colonel Gillweather), Dee Baldock (Miss Tweed), and Marcus Wisniewski (Geoffrey).
Verona Area Community Theater’s “Something’s Afoot” runs October 30, 31, November 5, 6, 7 at 7:30pm and November 1 at 2:00pm at the Verona High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets run from $8-$12.
